The Goddess to be worshipped on the seventh day of Navaratri is Goddess Kaalratri. There is a great significance of Goddess Kaalratri on this day. ‘Shubhankari’ is another name for her.
Goddess Kaalratri was born to eradicate evil in all its forms. Demons, ghosts and evil spirits tremble in fear just by hearing her name. She is known to drive away all household problems. Through her devoted worship one can overcome fears of fire, water, evil beings and the darkness of the night. One becomes free of any kind of fear and burden.
The Legend:
Goddess Kaalratri defeated a demon that grew stronger when his blood fell on the earth. She drank his blood before it could fall to the land, and thus triumphed over him. It is also said that at one point, Goddess Kaalratri shed her golden complexion to fight another demon. Since then she has taken on a fierce and formidable look. Yet, the fruits of her blessings are sweet and pure. Her devotees need not be scared by her appearance, as she is bound to destroy all kinds of evil and demonic presences, and is thus known as the Goddess of Goodwill.
Her appearance:
Goddess Kaalratri is dark in complexion, and resembles the darkness of the night. She has two hands on her left – with which she holds a weapon and a night lamp in each, and two hands on the right – which are in mudras of blessing and shielding. She has long black hair and is seen wearing a shining ornament in her neck. When she breathes, sparks are visible from her nose. She has a third eye on her forehead which shoots sharp beams of light. She always rides atop a donkey.
The ritual:
This ritual requires a holy midnight vigil. The Goddess is offered with fruits like Chickoo and sources of light like lamps or candles along with aromatic flowers.
The following is the prayer mantra:
एकवेणी जपाकर्णपूरा नग्ना खरास्थिता।
लम्बोष्ठी कर्णिकाकर्णी तैलाभ्यक्त शरीरिणी।।
वामपादोल्लसल्लोह लताकण्टकभूषणा।
वर्धन मूर्धध्वजा कृष्णा कालरात्रिर्भयड्करी।।
